Addiction and Recovery

“The opposite of addiction is not sobriety. It’s connection.” (Johann Hari) | Tranquil Hearts Therapy, Fort Myers FL .

Addiction is not about weakness or willpower. It’s a survival strategy, a way of numbing pain, regulating overwhelming emotions, or filling a space that’s been empty for a long time. Whether it’s substances, food, relationships, or behaviors like shopping or scrolling, addiction often comes with shame, isolation, and a deep sense of grief: Why do I keep doing this when I don’t want to?

At Tranquil Hearts Therapy, we do not shame or label. We get curious. We work together to understand what the addiction has been trying to protect you from and what needs haven’t been met underneath the pattern.

What Addiction Often Covers

Addiction doesn’t show up out of nowhere. In our work with clients in Fort Myers and Cape Coral, we’ve seen how addiction can be rooted in:

  • Attachment wounds — feeling unloved, unseen, or emotionally unsafe as a child
  • Trauma — including emotional neglect, abandonment, or abuse
  • Shame — the deep belief that “there’s something wrong with me”
  • Emotional dysregulation — not knowing how to soothe without shutting down
  • Loneliness or spiritual disconnection — a craving for meaning, peace, or belonging

Therapy is not about taking away your coping tools overnight. It’s about helping you find new ways to regulate, connect, and live without needing to go numb to survive.

Our Therapeutic Approach to Addiction Recovery

At Tranquil Hearts, we combine evidence-based modalities with deep emotional inquiry. We recognize that addiction is often tied to relational pain which means we have to heal at the level of connection, not just behavior.

We use:

  • ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) - to help you notice urges and pain without fusing with them. ACT teaches you how to live in alignment with your values even when discomfort shows up so that freedom isn’t dependent on feeling perfect.
  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) - To identify and challenge the thought loops that feed shame or self-sabotage. We explore how your beliefs were shaped and how to choose more compassionate, grounded perspectives.
  • DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) - To build emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness skills. DBT offers structure and tools for when emotions feel too big or too fast.

What You Can Expect in Therapy

Addiction therapy at Tranquil Hearts is not about punishment. It is about deep listening, trust-building, and real tools for lasting change. We create a safe space where you can show up honestly, even when you’re struggling.

Addiction often begins when connection is disrupted, and involves going through trauma, we ask attachment based questions to help you meet yourself with compassion - not blame, and begin to untangle the roots beneath the pattern.

In therapy, you will:

  • Develop awareness of triggers, emotional cues, and avoidance strategies
  • Learn to ride out cravings and impulses with gentleness, not fear
  • Build self-compassion, boundaries, and healthy relationships
  • Explore grief, shame, trauma, and the unmet needs driving the addiction
  • Reconnect with your inner self, not the version shaped by pain or fear

We also explore support group options such as:

  • AA, NA, and SMART Recovery
  • Women's-only support groups (local & online)
  • Trauma-informed online spaces for addiction and codependency healing

We will help you find a group that aligns with your values and emotional needs, because recovery is never meant to happen in isolation.

You Don’t Have to Go Through This Alone

There is no one path to healing — but it always begins with safety, honesty, and support. Whether you’ve just started to question your relationship with a behavior, or you’ve been through the cycle of relapse and shame more times than you can count, there’s a way forward that isn’t about perfection. It’s about permission — to be human, to feel, and to choose something different.
